The Ahwar marshlands of Iraq, which are a refuge of biodiversity and have a cultural significance dating back to Mesopotamia, are threatened by drought, wasteful water practices in Iraq, and the building of new dams in Turkey and Iran. The Ahwari Human Rights Network works to preserve the marshlands by organizing residents and leading protests against the Iraqi government’s harmful water policies.
