Melvin Smith

Cultures of Resistance Awardee — St. Lucia
Melvin Smith is a botanist in St. Lucia whose work is helping preserve these dynamic and important plant populations, including the near-extinct pencil cedar tree also known as the juniper. Through his work, Smith has added over 400 new species to the list of known plants in St. Lucia.  
Smith received a Cultures of Resistance Award (CoR Award) in 2022. This award was supported by our sister foundation, the Cultures of Resistance Network, with fiscal sponsorhip from Fauna & Flora International.
