Cultures of Resistance Awardee — Nigeria
Tobi Akinde is a Nigerian filmmaker, film curator, and researcher with an interest in protest culture and in using representations of everyday life as a way of combatting stereotypes. His films include We are Tired (2020), a documentary about sexual violence, and Soja Go Soja Come (2021), a short film about the effects of COVID-19 on those with already precarious livelihoods. Akinde co-curates Monangambee, a monthly Pan-African nomadic micro-cinema. He also co-organizes weekly screenings at Thursday Film Series, a film club for students at the University of Ibadan. Akinde has also curated films for the African Studies Book Club at the University of Cambridge.
