Cultures of Resistance Awardee — Western Sahara

Dighya Mohammed Salem is a renown singer, born in 1966 in Dakhla, Western Sahara. During the Western Sahara War in 1975, Dighya fled to a refugee camp on the Algerian border. Dighya’s music is dedicated to the struggles of the people of Western Sahara for freedom and self-determination. After joining the revolutionary Sahrawi band Shaheed El Wali, Dighya recorded an album in Paris in 1989 and toured Spain, Italy, and Germany. For her latest project, Dighya collaborated with the Palestinian rapper and beatmaker, OSLOOB. Together, they weaved Dighya’s traditional folk singing with OSLOOB’s electronic compositions. Through conversations, reflections, and shared music, Dighya and Osloob explored their diverse approaches to the craft.

Dighya received a Cultures of Resistance Award (CoR Award) in 2023.
