Cultures of Resistance Awardee — Brazil
Sandra Regina Gonçalves is a shellfish gatherer born and raised in the municipality of Curuça, located in the Extractive Reserve Mãe Grande de Curuçá in Brazil. Since the age of 8, she has been accompanying her mother in shellfish gathering, where she learned the art of collecting shellfish, crabs, and shrimp, in partnership with other women from the community.
Sandra played a crucial role in the creation of the Extractive Reserve Mãe Grande de Curuçá, which promotes lower-impact fishing practices and valuing the natural fish production chain. Sandra is an active council member in eight marine Extractive Reserves along the coast of Pará and also serves on the board of the National Council of Extractive Populations (CNS).
