Cultures of Resistance Awardee — Brazil
Carlos Pereira is part of quilombo community in Central Brazil. The quilombola are the Afro-Brazilian residents of quilombo settlements first established by escaped slaves in Brazil. Carlos has a degree in rural education from the University of Brasília and a Masters in Sustainability with Traditional Peoples and Lands. His research is about the biodiversity and architecture in quilombo communities. Since 2022, Carlos has been the president of the Quilombo Kalunga Association (AQK). In 2024, he organized the construction of Espaço Borboleta which is a multi-use space for elderly quilombola in Cavalcante, Brazil.
Carlos received a Cultures of Resistance Award (CoR Award) in 2024. He used the award to buy building materials for Espaço Borboleta.
