Cultures of Resistance Awardee — Kenya
Fernando Anuang’a is a Kenyan dancer and choreographer who began his dancing in 1990. He is influenced by Maasai traditional dance, which has shaped his unique approach to contemporary dance. Anuang’a has studied under renowned French choreographer Carolyn Carlson, enhancing his skills and artistic vision. Anuang’a has performed internationally from France to Italy to Canada to his home country of Kenya. His work “Traditional Future” was showcased at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris and the Grand Theatre – Espace Cardin in 2011. Anuang’a’s work is recognized for its unique blend of traditional and contemporary dance, making significant contributions to the Kenyan and international dance scenes.
Anuang’a received a Cultures of Resistance Award (CoR Award) in 2023. He is using the award to support an arts center in Maasai Mara, Kenya.
