Cultures of Resistance Awardee — South Africa
Athenkosi Kwinana is a South African visual artist who specializes in printmaking and drawing. Kwinana is a black woman person living with albinism (PLWA) and Kwinana’s artworks closely focus on themes related to albinism, human rights and gender dynamics. Kwinana is inspired by South African printmaker Diane Victor and visual activist Zanele Muholi.
Kwinana’s latest body of artworks, Reimagining Albus (2022), focused on the representation of PLWA in South African visual culture.
Kwinana received a Cultures of Resistance Award (CoR Award) in 2022 is using the award money to expand her Reimagining Albus project.
