Cultures of Resistance Awardee — Western Sahara
Founded in 1974 and guided by the work of Aminatou Haidar, a Sahrawi human rights defender, the Unión Nacional de Mujeres Saharauis (UNMS) is a coalition of female activists that monitors human rights abuses against the Sahrawi people. UNMS activists have endured imprisonment, beatings, and torture, yet they persist in expanding their struggle both locally and internationally. The organization spotlights the indispensable role that women play in the development of society and aims to increase women’s involvement in decision-making processes when it comes to the the Sharawi people, refugees, and liberation.
