Cultures of Resistance Awardee — Brazil
Casa Memória da Mulher Kalunga was created by Marta Kalunga, a Kalunga quilombola leader, weaver, and tour guide. Situated in Cavalcante, in Central-West Brazil, this cultural center serves as a space for the Kalunga people. The mission of Casa Memória is to stimulate income generation and financial autonomy for Kalunga women. Since its founding in July 2022, Casa Memória da Mulher Kalunga has been dedicated to hosting workshops, courses, and cultural exchange actions and events. In line with its mission, the cultural center expanded opportunities for generating income for quilombola women living in Kalunga territory by running a cafe and a small market. Through these initiatives, Casa Memória seeks to empower Kalunga women and preserve their cultural heritage.
Casa Memória da Mulher Kalunga received a Cultures of Resistance Award (CoR Award) in 2024. They used the award to support community film screenings.
