Cultures of Resistance Awardee — Syria
At 50 years old, Aziz Al-Asmar is a graffiti painter from the city of Binnish in northern Syria. His drawings have covered the walls of houses bombed by warplanes and explore global issues including displacement, the effects of war, racism, the environment and human rights. His drawings have depicted topics including the murder of George Floyd, the Russian war on Ukraine, forest fires in Greece, protests in France, floods in Sudan and many other themes. He believes that drawing is a universal language.
Aziz Al-Asmar received a Cultures of Resistance Award (CoR Award) in 2022 and will be using his award to support his art practice.
