Val Lopes

Cultures of Resistance Awardee — Cape Verde
Val Lopes is a storyteller, audio engineer, and film director. He takes inspiration from the rich history of the African continent. Val’s most recent documentary, “The Africologist,” is about the history of the world from an African perspective. The film covers the birth of the universe, Africa’s medieval Golden Age in the 14th and 15th century, the Atlantic Slave Trade and colonialism, independence movements, and concludes with a glimpse into the twenty-first century and the future currently being shaped. Along the journey, Africa’s major contributions to science and humanity serve as a guiding thread to connect the stories. Through his many creative projects Val is committed to the celebration and empowerment of African people.
