Cultures of Resistance Awardee — UK
Rahima Mahmut is a Uyghur singer and human rights activist in exile in the UK. Mahmut has composed songs from the poems of persecuted Uyghur writers, and her music has been featured in news documentaries highlighting the plight of her people.
The SOAS Silk Road Collective is a musical group that works to encourage collaboration among musicians from different cultures along the Silk Road in order to celebrate their shared heritage. The core of the group includes Uzbek and Uyghur performers, and they have collaborated with musicians and dancers from India, China, Japan and elsewhere. The group is led by Mahmut.
The SOAS Silk Road Collective received a Cultures of Resistance Award (CoR Award) in 2022.
