Instituto Zé Cláudio e Maria

Cultures of Resistance Awardee — Brazil
José Cláudio Ribeiro da Silva and Maria do Espírito Santo da Silva were two environmental activists who were assassinated in 2011 for defending a forest in Brazil from lumber companies. In their honor, the Instituto Zé Cláudio e Maria was formed with the mission to protect environmental activists by providing financial support, security, psychological support, and even safe exile. Additionally, Instituto Zé Cláudio e Maria aims to provide environmental education in an accessible way either online or through in-person classes, workshops, and retreats.
Instituto Zé Cláudio e Maria received a Cultures of Resistance Award (CoR Award) in 2023.
